Who we are

The European Patent Office (EPO) is the second-largest European organisation, employing 7 000 staff from over 30 countries. The EPO is the executive arm of the European Patent Organisation. It is headquartered in Munich, but also has a branch in The Hague, offices in Berlin and Vienna, and a liaison office in Brussels.

Here at the EPO we prove that people from all over Europe can work together and get things done! The co-operation is very good and the atmosphere is fantastic.

The EPO strives to support innovation and promote a knowledge-based society in Europe:

  • Patent protection enables inventors and companies to be rewarded for their innovation.
  • The EPO has built up the world’s largest databases of technical information, which it makes available to the public free of charge.
  • It also offers a complete range of training on patenting and IP issues

The EPO’s mission is to secure the highest quality standards in patenting:

  • The European Patent Convention (EPC) provides the legal backbone for its patenting practice.
  • The EPO offers a uniform application procedure leading to patent protection in up to 40 European countries.
  • Processes at the EPO are fair, transparent and closely monitored for quality at all times.

As an employer, the EPO provides a distinctly multinational work environment in an intellectually stimulating atmosphere:

  • We focus on building long-term relationships with our employees.
  • We empower our staff to take responsibility and make the right decisions.

Based on this foundation of mutual trust and respect, we at the EPO are ready to meet the future challenges in European intellectual property.

The EPO fosters diversity and inclusion. The EPO is an equal opportunities employer and supports workforce diversity as a signatory to the Diversity Charter (Charta der Vielfalt) since 2010. We strive to maintain a diverse and inclusive work environment and culture. All our employees are unique and valuable human beings and are treated with respect and dignity. They appreciate diversity and inclusion as a way to live and work together on our mission.

Be part of our digital transformation

With almost 7 000 employees, the European Patent Office (EPO) is one of the largest public service institutions in Europe. An innovative, quality-oriented, diverse and dynamic employer, it was founded with the aim of strengthening co-operation on patents in Europe. Through its centralised patent granting procedure, inventors are able to obtain high-quality patent protection in up to 44 countries. The EPO is also the world’s leading authority in patent information and patent searching. It supports innovation, competitiveness and economic growth across Europe through a commitment to high-quality and efficient services delivered under the European Patent Convention, its founding treaty. It has a yearly budget of EUR 2.3 billion, entirely financed by the fees paid by its users.

The EPO is about to embark on an extensive digital transformation programme that will involve seamlessly replacing legacy applications and costly mainframes with modern technologies covering the entire patent granting process. Continuous integration tools and cloud-native technologies have the potential to make the software development process faster and more efficient, but require sound reference architecture in order to be able to deliver these benefits.
