A Career in Consulting
Our people come from a variety of fields and professions, including finance, government, engineering, law, the military, medicine, and industry.
Some individuals join as a generalist or a practice consultant, typically at the associate level, depending on experience. Others may join as a specialist or an expert (sometimes more senior roles) in a specific industry or functional practice.
You may find a fit with our expanding work in digital and advanced analytics, which combines traditional world-class consulting with expertise in areas such as data analytics, business turn around, operations, and software development and design. Implementation work is growing quickly as well—our coaches help clients achieve bottom-line results by working with them from project initiation through implementation. Experienced professionals in the research and analytics fields tend to join as knowledge specialists, although starting positions may vary based on your background.
From their first day at McKinsey, consultants work on a project team with other consultants, in close collaboration with clients. They take part in all steps of the project, from the problem definition phase to the final presentation of our recommendations. Thanks to wide diversity of projects, consultants get a chance to work on many different topics, resulting in a steep learning curve and continuous professional development. McKinsey consultants participate to many trainings at all stages in their careers.
We will empower you to take your skills to a higher level, use them in a new way or apply them more broadly and in many ways:
- Your business knowledge and experience in a particular sector or function can be invaluable in solving client problems
- Apply effective problem solving approaches—developing hypotheses, synthesizing data, drawing conclusions, and making recommendations—this matches perfectly with what we do at McKinsey
- Contribute expertise in an industry or function that allows you to collaborate especially well with our teams and clients
A global women’s network
McKinsey Women is our global firm-wide network of female consultants—a powerful resource that provides formal and informal mentoring, training, and relationship-building opportunities. Each office fosters local connections and delivers local programs to help women connect, learn, and grow.
Find out from women around the world as they share candid updates about their lives and careers via our McKinsey Women Blog.
Learning and Development
We offer women-focused programs to help you maximize your strengths, develop your network, and grow as a leader.
Women-specific training programs are offered at every level. For example, female business analysts and associates can attend the Engaging with Presence workshop, and other female-only training programs include Women’s Leadership Workshop, Pathway to Partner, and Pathway to Director. By the time a woman reaches partnership, she will have spent close to three full weeks in women-specific programs in addition to our other formal training programs.
Advocacy and Research
At McKinsey, we have a deep and longstanding commitment to advancing parity for women in work and in society. To date, we’ve invested more than $20 million in original research on the importance of women in leadership positions and in the economy.
Through over 10 years of this groundbreaking research, we have set out a compelling business and economic case. Using our global reach, we share our insights, convene partnerships for action and serve clients, to inform critical decision-makers with the power to make real change.
Although inclusion and diversity have always been core to our mission and values, our research inspired us to accelerate our efforts to advance gender parity within our firm.
