There are two application windows:

Imec itself is not giving PhD degrees but acts as a host research institute for PhD and postdoc research in collaboration with 5 Flemish universities: KU Leuven, UGent, VUBrussel, UAntwerpen, UHasselt. Imec has also signed dual degree PhD agreements with Flemish and international universities. Both engineers and scientists can apply because of the multidisciplinary character of our research. PhDs get supported by professors of both national and international universities, all of them experts in their domains.
Imec has a dual degree agreement with different universities.

Application and selection process

Prepare

  • Read the PhD Admission Requirements
  • Choose your topics and look up the reference codes (2023-001). You can apply for maximum 3 projects in total.
  • Collect your documents in pdf format:
    • Download and complete the motivation letter
    • Resume
    • Bachelor's degree and transcripts
    • Master's degree and transcripts
      If you have not finished your master program yet, you can submit your degree when you graduate. Do submit your master examination results available at the time of application.
    • Proof of your English language proficiency (refer to the PhD Admission Requirements for details)
    • GRE score (refer to the PhD Admission Requirements for details)
    • Ask two referees to fill out the evaluation form for you and have them send their input to phd@imec.be before the deadline (15 April 2023 or 15 December 2023). The letters of recommendation are confidential and are an essential part of your application. We will not be able to process your application without the evaluation forms so it is important that you contact your referees in time.

Submit

  • Go to the submission form by clicking on 'Apply'
  • Upload all your application documents in separate PDF files. Do not upload secured or password protected files.
  • Deadline before December 15 or April 15

Attention points

  • As our PhD students are selected based on a centralized application procedure and not by individual supervisors kindly refrain from contacting our professors directly.
  • Do not submit unsolicited documents with your application, e.g. do not submit high school diplomas.
  • We do not accept any revised documents or additional information after the application is submitted, so please be sure to review your motivation letter and other documents very carefully before submitting your application.
  • If we do not receive all required documents, including the reference letters, by the application deadline, your application will not enter the screening process.
  • If you are interested in the dual degree opportunity, please mention this in your application.
  • We will acknowledge receipt of your application by email. Please take into account that processing your application - especially around the application deadline - may take several days.

Selection

Review of application

  • When the application window closes, a panel of senior researchers and experts will closely read and evaluate your application file. Approximately one month after the application deadline, you will be informed whether or not you are selected for an interview with our researchers.

Interviewing with committee

  • If you have been shortlisted for an interview, you will be contacted by email to fix a date. It will be planned as soon as possible but ultimately within 6 weeks after a positive evaluation in the first round.
  • The interview will be either via Microsoft Teams, telephone, or face-to-face if you are residing in Belgium. During this elaborate in-depth interview both your technical and non-technical competencies will be evaluated. The interviewers will let you know how to prepare for the interview.

Final result

  • When the interviewing finishes, the PhD admission committee will consolidate the interview feedback and decide which applicants will be offered admission. The offers of admission are typically sent out 2.5 months after the application deadline.
  • Candidates who are not accepted, at any stage in the selection process, will be notified by email. If you have not heard from us regarding the status of your application, it is because a final decision has not been reached yet. We always communicate the final status to all applicants once the admissions committee has finalized their decision.

The entire procedure from closure of the application window to the final result takes about 12 weeks.

Equipment Maintenance Engineer

As an Equipment Maintenance Engineer, you'll start your journey in our esteemed FAB Engineering team by getting hands-on with the high-tech process equipment in our cleanroom. Process Engineer

Orchestrating todays processes and crafting tomorrows processes

What you will do

To support the growth of the FAB engineering department, we are hiring Process Engineers for the 6 key process areas: material deposition, lithography, dry etch & implant, wet processing, bonding & assembly, or metrology. Successful candidates will be matched with an area based on previous experience, personal interest and/or position availability.

As a Process Engineer, you are responsible for the standard processes and tools, and the introduction of new tools and processes in our pilot production line, both 200mm and 300mm. Typical responsibilities include:

  • You become a tool(s)/application expert and you get ownership of the tool; process performance, reservations, throughput, back-ups, training, first point of contact, etc.
  • You maintain your processes, monitor stability with SPC, resolve issues, and identify and implement improvements with respect to safety, quality and/or efficiency.
  • You analyze and execute requests for new process developments in collaboration with the internal or external customer.
  • You set-up experimental plans, you execute them in the cleanroom, analyze the data, and interpret the results.
  • You transfer processes from the R&D stage to the pilot production line in collaboration with researchers and operators.
  • You document processes, and ensure quality & safety levels are met.
  • You support new tool installations from process point of view: installing new recipes, qualifying the tool, setting up the process control monitors, contamination checks, etc.

In summary, a very diverse and interesting role with significant responsibilities that allow you to gain a lot of expertise and build a large internal network.

  • You have a Master’s degree in the field of Science or Engineering (Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science or Engineering) or equivalent by experience with a passion for cutting edge technology.

  • Knowledge and experience in one (or more) of the 6 key semiconductor process areas and their related tools.
  • Knowledge and experience of various process control and improvement techniques (e.g., SPC, Cp/CpK, FMEA, 8D, 6sigma, etc.).

Process & Support Assistant

You are responsible for the coordination and part-time operation of high-tech equipment in the cleanroom. Together with your colleagues you monitor the quality of the production steps and ensure that the targets for cycle time, quality, safety and volume are met.

What you will do

Your responsibility? To be the first-line support of operational, technical, process and hardware issues with the processes and machines in our cleanrooms. Those are not just any machines by the way, they’re the best in the world. And you’re the one who keeps them up and running.

That means you and your colleagues enable our researchers to make prototypes of the technologies that will improve the lives of millions. As a team, you monitor the quality of the production steps and make sure that the targets for safety, quality, speed and volume are met.

  • You’re the first point of contact for the troubleshooting, maintenance and follow-up of the processes
  • You search and find solutions for hardware problems or process-related issues. Or you perform the first troubleshooting. Together with our engineers, you analyze how to avoid these problems and try to find a sustainable solution.
  • You develop and optimize our OCAP (Out of Control Action Plan) and the ‘first-aid’ procedures for hardware or processes when necessary.
  • You capture recurring problems and find structural solutions. Or you escalate complex problems with clear problem descriptions to the engineers
  • You come up with ideas to improve the safety, quality and efficiency of the devices you operate.
  • You organize trainings for your fellow operators and test their qualifications.

Quantum Computing Device Engineer, Spin Qubits

The Quantum Device Team at imec is looking for outstanding candidates to join their efforts help integrate ultra-high performance Spin Qubit devices.

What you will do

Within imec’s Quantum Program activities, we aspire to integrate and characterize state of the art spin qubit devices using imec’s advanced semiconductor manufacturing facility. We explore different semiconducting materials and stacks, we investigate their long-term performance and ultimate limitation, and we aim to thereby take quantum computing from the laboratory to real life implementation, leveraging the advanced, industrial level nanofabrication facilities as present in imec’s 300 mm silicon pilot lines.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Conception and design of single and multi-qubit arrays spin qubit devices.
  • Helping to develop technological and application-driven roadmaps for relevant technology modules, in close collaboration with the integration and fabrication teams at imec.
  • Cryogenic characterization of various qubit performance metrics: spin manipulation and measurement of characteristic lifetimes, characterization of multi-qubit arrays, noise and variability studies, fundamental, physical investigations of performance limiting factors.
  • Continuous development and troubleshooting of the measurement setups. Development of high-throughput setups and measurement routines.
  • Contribution to and guidance of the integration effort leveraging imec know-how on advanced scaling nodes and semiconductor technologies.
  • Regular engagement with imec partners via internal reporting, contribute to bilateral projects.
  • Definition of experiments, communication, and interpretation of experimental results in a clear and concise manner.
  • Development of international academic collaborations and research projects.
  • Contribution to the scientific output via publications in high impact factor journals.

What you will do

As Senior Business Development Manager, you are responsible for the strategic partnerships in your portfolio of equipment and material companies:

  • Build and manage the strategy for a portfolio of equipment and material suppliers in close collaboration with the technical units
  • Detect, track and quantify market trends, map imec R&D roadmaps onto market needs and identify opportunities for collaboration
  • Develop long term forecasts and business cases to support investment decisions
  • Define the go-to-market strategy and collect voice-of-customer inputs to prepare the imec (technical) value proposals in collaboration with the technical units
  • Manage the partnership strategy:
    • Build and nourish excellent relationships at multiple levels, with R&D and BU’s of customers
    • Ensure customer satisfaction
    • Identify opportunities for growth based on the customer roadmaps.
    • First business point of contact– escalation path in case of issues (technical & non-technical)
    • Trusted partner for (internal and external) senior management stakeholders
  • Own the business for the companies within your portfolio:
    • Close business deals to ensure imec access to advanced equipment and materials through partnerships
