Nokia Bell Labs is the world-renowned research arm of Nokia, having invented many of the foundational technologies that underpin information and communications networks and all digital devices and systems. This research has produced nine Nobel Prizes, five Turing Awards and numerous other awards.

The Data Driven Software Systems Research team builds reliable, trustworthy and intuitive software systems. Broad research focus areas in the team include stream processing, distributed computing, including serverless computing, and decentralized computing (Web3/Blockchain), privacy-preserving & trust insertion technologies, as well as AI/ML software systems, AI-powered developer tooling and software language engineering (Low-code platforms). Our international team is based primarily in Antwerp, Belgium and Stuttgart, Germany.

Your skills and experience

We are looking for a motivated research scientist with academic or applied research experience in one of the following areas of computer science research:

  • Distributed Systems
  • Software Language Engineering
  • Machine Learning

Specific areas of interest include:

  • Decentralized computing platforms and protocols
  • Distributed ledger technologies (DLT) and smart contracting platforms
  • Incentive engineering, mechanism design, game theory as applied to distributed systems
  • Compiler design, program analysis, program synthesis
  • Privacy-preserving & trust insertion technologies, such as, trusted execution environments, zero knowledge proofs, differential privacy, secure multiparty computation

In addition:

  • You have a PhD degree in Computer Science / Electrical Engineering / ICT Engineering. Post-doc experience or industry experience is a plus.
  • Publications in top ACM and IEEE conferences are a definite plus.
  • You are a great communicator, able to explain your research to a broad audience. You have delivered talks at relevant international workshops, conferences, or other events.
  • You have demonstrable programming skills. Pointers to research prototypes you have built or open source libraries you have contributed to, are much appreciated.
  • You are a quick learner, able to identify & research new technologies.
  • You have personal drive, are committed to team objectives and have a positive, “can-do” attitude. You can work autonomously with little day-to-day guidance.
